suicide, The Silent Killer Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death across all ages in the United States. It is also the second leading cause of death for 15 - 35 year olds nationwide. The World Health Organization (or WHO) estimates that approximately 1 million people die every year from suicide. However, almost twice that number that attempt it and survived. In Georgia suicide is the third leading cause of death with roughly 1,000 death per year. Suicide has lasting effects on families and communities; Understanding the risk factors, recognizing the warning signs and taking them seriously suicide becomes very preventable. What drives people to suicide? To the individuals not at the grips of suicidal depression and despair, it can be very difficult to understand what drives many to take their own lives. To a suicidal person, suicide is a very desperate attempt to escape from all of the suffering that has become incredibly unbearable. Blinded by feelings of self-loathing, hopelessness, and isolation, a suicidal person cannot see any other possible way of finding relief except through death. But, even though desperate in their desire to stop the pain, some suicidal people have become very deeply conflicted about ending their lives.
